Trains running through Widdrington station have not been cancelled but an earlier signalling problem did cause delays on the east coast mainline.
Northumberland County Council has also warned that some school buses in the area may have been delayed or diverted.
The B1337 which runs across the level crossing has been closed while Network Rail engineers work at the site.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Just after 12.30pm, we received reports that a vehicle had struck the overhead lines at Widdrington level crossing.
The vehicle hit the overhead power cables at Widdrington station at the level crossing just before 12.30pm on Friday.
