Ashe was first on the scene, Kilcullen said, before firefighters arrived, and there was a report that at least one of the occupants was still inside. Ashe entered the building, located and rescued an occupant.

The James W. Baker Award, named after a former chief, was presented to Cpl. Damon Nguyen and Officer Eric Morgano, who resurrected the department’s cadet program in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America.

That 11-year-old was Ibane Earle, whom the department honored with its Good Citizen Award for showing resourcefulness in getting medical help for his mother’s boyfriend.

Police Commission Chairman Sean Sargeant said the department has nine cadets, who take a weekly two-hour class and help out at special events.

Warfle was again honored, alongside Officers Ryan Ashe, Bryant Cleveland and Tyler Billings, for their response to a house fire in late September.
