State awards $1M in transportation grants to Somerset County projects – Daily American Online

The date at the top of the Burkholder Bridge sign reads 1870.

#8220;Those covered bridges are very unique. It#8217;s so important to keep them, but it#8217;s a lot of money to keep them. . . . They#8217;re old.#8221;

• $269,824 to Somerset County for repairs to two covered bridges: Burkholder Bridge in Brothersvalley Township and Packsaddle Bridge in Fairhope Township. The bridges are showing signs of rotting. Both will undergo renovations to restore their structural integrity. The total cost of the project is $399,824.

The grants will fund projects to improve transportation infrastructure, promote public safety and enhance economic development, according to a press release from state Sen. Pat Stefano and state Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar. They are:

• $250,000 to Corsa Coal Corp., of Friedens, for rehabilitation of a rail loop at Corsa#8217;s Cambria preparation plant in Stonycreek Township. The rail will allow the transportation of metallurgical coal to market by rail rather than by truck. Upgrades include replacing culverts, crosstie replacements and track maintenance.

Commissioner John Vatavuk said the grant will help because the bridges are in serious need of repair.
