As police fight to end the menace of gun thugs, they are now offering the opportunity for weapons and ammunition to be handed over with no questions asked.

The video was released as police launched a two week gun surrender campaign in a bid to reduce the number of deadly weapons on our streets.

With detectives realistic over the likelihood of gun criminals coming forward, a key aim is to prevent guns held by others from falling into the wrong hands.

Firearms were previously smelted at a specialist facility #8211; a practice that required an armed escort every time they were sent for destruction.
